Starting A Coffee Shop-The Right
Atmosphere
The truth is, the atmosphere of your coffee shop is really an extension of your product. Imagine a Dunkin Donuts
with the decorations of a Starbucks. It wouldn't work. That's why each Dunkin Donuts, from the outside sign and
door to the inside tables and counter, looks the same. It's like they're cloned, and that's done for a
reason...they know what works for THEIR target market.
Same with Starbucks. Not a knock on Dunkin Donuts, but they're not in the same league, ambiance wise, as
Starbucks and the product itself shows. Starbucks has the fancier coffees, the fancier pastries and the higher
prices. As a result, when you walk into a Starbucks, you also get the impression that you're walking into a
classier establishment.
What YOU need to do is take a look at the product that YOU have decided to market and figure out what people
coming in for THAT product will expect to find as far as tables and chairs and counters. What about the lighting?
Have you noticed that Dunkin Donuts is very well lit while Starbucks has a little more atmosphere with low
lighting? They do that for a reason. Fancier places generally are not well lit. That's why the fanciest
restaurants, you need to bring a flashlight with you to see your meal.
