How to Open a Coffee Shop
Figuring out how to open a coffee shop can be fun and exciting for the prepared and well-informed entrepreneur.
While buying coffee tends to be an impulse buy, learning how to open a coffee shop should not be.
The first order of business is, “Know thyself.” Why do you want to own your own business? What
attracts you to this particular one? What are you skill sets? Are you good at marketing, finances, interior
design, web design, and/or promotions? Are you a people person? Are you comfortable with risk? If so, how much?
What is your passion? Your answers to these questions will help determine how many of these services you will
need to hire out. OR whether or not you should even consider owning your own business, particularly a retail
business.
The outgoing risk taker can do well in the coffee shop business. Many who take this step have
worked in a coffee shop and invariably decided they would do some things differently, even better than, their
current boss. Being your own boss affords you the opportunity to prove yourself right.
It is advisable that the passionate barista who is learning how to open a coffee shop of his or
her own extend their experience with specialized schooling to take them to the next level. This is often a brief
(as little as two days) investment that pays off in big ways. If your only training has been on-the-job, you’ve
only learned to make drinks the way the person who showed you makes them. A well-rounded experience can only
improve your skill level.
Once you’ve perfected your art, you’ll want to extend that education to any baristas you hire.
Consistency and quality control can make or break a business. If clients can consistently count on a coffee drink
made perfectly every time, they’re not going to go the cookie-cutter automated franchise across the street or down
the road.
If you are the artistic creative type with a good sense of color and composition, there are
resources to help you design your own interior décor and floor plan, your menus, and other visuals. Identify with
your target clientele and create an atmosphere you would want to spend time in.
Perhaps your forte’ is food. An extended menu of sandwiches, cookies, muffins and other light
meals and snacks will afford you an opportunity to express your passion. And don’t forget the tea drinkers. There
is a plethora of exotic herbal teas and black tea blends that will help expand your client base beyond just coffee
drinkers.
Whatever your creative strengths may be, use them to your advantage. However, be ready to be
brutally honest with yourself about what your weaknesses are and don’t hesitate to seek out professionals who can
help you in those areas. It is foolish to reinvent the wheel. You will doubtless run into unexpected challenges, so
minimizing your attendance in the school of hard knocks would be advantageous.
By learning how to open a coffee shop, you are embarking on thrilling adventure with great
promise. Maximize your potential and don’t be afraid of what you don’t know. Ignorance is merely the catalyst to an
exciting learning experience with tremendous rewards at the end.
